Setting Up Webpages
|
With your dialup account you have space for a personal home page. Individuals can access this space and set up a home page for free. Customers who require domain name hosting (www.yourdomain.com) should contact us for more information.
The process by which files are transferred to the web server is called "FTP" (File Transport Protocol). You have unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure.
To access your private web space, you must first obtain an file transfer package. See our Resource area for links to other on-line tools and software. Once you have an FTP package ready for use, you will have to configure it for our server.
Unlike public FTP where you can only download, private FTP on the server allows you to upload and download. Set the server name to cast.navnet.net and supply your userid and password.
When you connect to the server, you will find yourself in your home directory (/usr/home/userid). There you should see a directory named public_html.
Any files placed in the public_html directory will be instantly available to the www.
Change to the public_html directory and copy your files from your PC to the server. To have the system find your site from a browser, your main page must be called index.phpl. If you forget to do this anyone surfing to your site will see a directory listing instead of your page. Also, you need all web pages to have the four letter extension - html
Now, from your browser, surf to http://www.navnet.net/~userid/ where userid is your username. It is that easy. To edit your page, change the files on your PC and FTP them to the server again.
Extra services are available from NavNet such as hit counters and feedback forms. They are provided to help round out your site and are up to you to include in your pages if you wish to use them.
If you have any questions on the above, feel free to e-mail us.
We'll assume that you've waded through the installation and now have an icon that will launch WS_FTP on your computer. Double-click on the icon to start the application. You should be presented with a window called Session Properties specifying where to connect to. Click on the New button to create a new connection site and fill in the fields so that they look like the following:

note: username and password should be filled in with the username
and password given to you in order to access the NavNet server
Once you have filled in your information - click the Save PWD Radio Box and click Apply. To connect to the server simply click OK. When you connect to the server, you will find yourself in your home directory (/usr/home/userid). There you should see a directory named public_html. Any files placed in the public_html directory will be instantly available to the www.
