Foggy Notions

 Cape Islander

Actual working weather vane. Handmade in Sambro, Nova Scotia by Les Tough. Mr. Tough went to sea as a boy in the 1930's and he has spent his life working on the ocean. Lobstermen made their boats and traps of wood. Carving and "tinkering" is a natural extension of their skills. When I first went looking for my own weather vane I asked everyone where Joseph Leo Tough lived. Noboby seemed to know. I told my friend Albert about this. He laughed and said "oh you mean Les". "His name is Joseph Leo but we all calls him Les". I told Les this and he just laughed. That's what I like about Les, he has a great sense of humour. It shows in his work. This is the real thing. This boat on the weathervane is a model of Les' boat. He jabs at the tiny rudder with a stubby finger and it turns. He laughs.
