More
than 8,000 km of rugged coastline help account for the unique collection
of lighthouses scattered around Nova Scotia. The allure of these
structures is no mystery for they have served seafarers as beacons
of comfort and home since the 1800s.
This
handy guide features a selection of eighty of the most interesting
and accessible lighthouses from Cape Forchu to Louisbourg. There
is also a listing of lights which, though they can only be reached
by boat, are visible from the rocky shores. Detailed directions
will take you along the province's breathtaking coast to tiny island
such as Isle Madame and brier island; through charming coastal villages
such as Cape St. Marys and Peggy's Cove; and to the heart of historic
towns such as Annapolis Royal and Louisbourg.
The
lively, text, organized around the province's scenic trails, describes
how lighthouses have evolved since the days of oil lamps and lighthouse
keepers to automated structures, and gives insights and anecdotes
about the history, and mystery of lights. It offers glimpses into
why the lighthouse continues to be both a romantic and cultural
symbol.
